Employer description and requirements
Journalist
As an elite author / journalist, you’ll bring narrative clarity, emotional intelligence, and a deep sense of human nuance to the data that trains frontier AI models. You’ll analyze and refine writing across styles — from investigative reporting to essayistic reflection — capturing what makes language vivid, persuasive, and true. This work calls for judgment and craft: the ability to detect tone, tension, and rhythm, and to teach those patterns through clear, structured examples. You’ll help shape how models learn to think and write with insight, restraint, and narrative power.
Recognized Excellence – Recipient of a Pulitzer, National Magazine Award, or equivalent literary/journalism honor, or long-form contributor to top outlets (e.g., The New Yorker, The Atlantic, NYT Magazine ) Narrative Precision – Ability to edit and critique prose for structure, pacing, and argument Intellectual Range – Comfort engaging with topics across culture, politics, science, and ethics Voice & Judgment – Sensitivity to tone, authenticity, and context in complex narratives
Reviewing or rewriting long-form essays for coherence, structure, and style Evaluating model-generated writing for narrative flow, balance, and emotional truth Designing writing and reasoning prompts that capture real journalistic decision-making Partnering with Surge researchers to formalize narrative and rhetorical evaluation standards
